I get quite a few requests by parents about on line security of their children. One of the requests that I get often is access to family computer accounts to check for Internet browsing history. this does not really fall under computer or laptop repair but I do anything I.T. so read on…
Most home PCs have Windows XP Home edition installed. Within XP there is the option to have separate account which are password protected.
Quite often the accounts are password protected and it would be great to have access just to check up on someones on line activity.
Step 1:
Enter windows in safe mode. Restart the computer, whilst at the computer start up screen (just after the BIOS screen) continually press the F8 key. This will bring up a menu. One of the options is enter windows in safe mode. Choose this.

Step 2:
When you enter safe mode, choose the option to log into the system as “Administrator”. Usually there is no password and this is left blank. The administrator account allows you to control all aspects of Windows. It is the god account.
Step 3:
Whilst in safe mode, go to start>control panel>user accounts

Choose the user in question and select them. Then click “reset password” button. This will allow you to reset the users password. Of course the user will now know that the password has been reset but it will give you access to their account. If you require that the password remains the same and the password is cracked. Stay tuned I’ll show you how in my next post.
